I'm 24 and onto my third career already. I am now working in real estate here. That's right. I have turned into my mother.

I liked working at Christie's - I learned a lot about art (in particular Egyptian, Greek and Roman, which was the dept I worked in) the art market, and the auction world. My dept had a very exciting and successful auction in Dec. where we set the world record for Egyptian sculpture TWICE (we broke our own record in the same auction. That has to be a first) and it was really exciting to be a part of it.
But without a masters degree in Art History I didn't have much of a future at the company beyond administrative work. And the idea of spending the next few years doing administrative work for little pay while sitting inside in an office all day seemed like a very depressing thought.
My time in the Antiquities dept was limited (I was covering for someone's maternity leave) and I was hoping to find another dept to transfer to while I was there. I interviewed for one position, in the wine dept, but when I didn't get it I felt strangely relieved. So I decided to pursue other options and decided on real estate. My mom loves it and the flexible schedule and walking around the city part of it, looking at pretty apts, appeal to me. It seems like a job where I would never be bored. And the pay will most definitely be better than the art world.
I took the real estate course last month and started working last week. I'm loving it so far and had my first lease signing yesterday. yay!
